Awra Amba Water Project:

Awra Amba is an intentional community in the Gonder region of Northern Ethiopia, acclaimed for its egalitarian principles, its self-reliance and hard work. In marked contrast to the traditional norms of the surrounding communities, women in Awra Amba have equal rights and equal decision-making power as men. Division of labor is based not on gender but on ability and skill. For the last forty-five years, Awra Amba has sustained its independence despite many challenges.

 

Due to climate change and persistent drought, they are now facing a severe shortage of water, a challenge they cannot win on their own. Friends of Awra Amba, in collaboration with Dir Biyabir, and the Awra Amba community, are launching a campaign to raise funds for the Awra Amba Water Project. These funds will help Awra Amba to purchase and install a solar powered water delivery system, assuring the community’s continued survival and growth.
